Get Out and Explore Texas

Get out and Explore Texas

This week is National Parks Week.  Across the United States, national parks will be offering free admission, special pricing, events and other activities travelers can participate in.  What a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors and explore Texas national parks at their finest.

Amistad National Recreation Area in Del Rio, Texas is unlike any other national park you’ll encounter in Texas.  Located on the southern part of the state, the Amistad National Recreation Area is an oasis in the desert.  It’s part of the International Amistad Reservoir that is known for its crystal clear waters, rich cultures, numerous water based activities, camping and hiking.

Because Amistad has such crystal clear waters, Oct-April, many visitors come out to go scuba diving and explore the vast underwater wildlife.  Visibility in the winter and spring months can reach up to 50 feet below, offering wonderful views of the underwater geological formations and sea life.  You can also go fishing and rent boats in the reservoir to enjoy year-round water recreation.

Another National Park you can visit is the popular Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas.  Located along the Texas-Mexico border and running along the Rio Grande River, it’s one of the most visited parks in the great state.  Spanning over 1,252 miles of terrain there is plenty to see and do.  The park offers over 150 miles of hiking trails that take you through stunning views of mountainous desert and rivers bends.  Camping is offered for those who wish to spend the night under the vast expanse of starry skies.santa-elena-canyon-347400_640

Whatever parks you decide to visit this week, take the time to get out and enjoy all the wonders that they have to offer.  Hiking and biking give you the opportunity to take in views that you cannot get by car or RV and it’s a great way to stay fit and active.  Visit www.nps.gov to find a list of more national parks near you.
