Spring Drive in Big Bend
Spring is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors in Texas. It feels good to get out and enjoy the warm sunshine after a cold winter and it’s not too hot to be outside yet. One of the best drives through Texas is through the Big Bend region. The drive takes you through the popular Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. It takes you through rugged mountain ranges, vast grasslands, and immense desert landscapes. So, get your RV ready and head out for a wonderful weekend drive.
Starting in the old oil town of Fort Stockton, this town has reconstructed buildings and shops that are open to visitors. From here you’ll travel to Alpine, also known as the gateway to Big Bend National Park. Alpine is a town surrounded by mountains and is home to the highest number of historical Adobe structures in Texas. The town is thriving with Mexican culture with its shops and restaurants that specialize in Mexican snow cones (Raspas), clay figurines, and homemade Mexican candies.
After Alpine, you’ll travel through the Paisano pass to a town called Marfa. You’ll want to stop at the Food Shark for lunch. It’s an RV that serves authentic, mouth watering, Middle Eastern cuisine. After you’ve filled your bellies, turn south past the old ghost town Schafer to the border town of Presidio. The drive continues along the scenic river road. This part takes you past the Rio Grande and if you stop at the top of Big Hill, overlooking the Santana Basin, you’ll find the most breathtaking views of the region.
Once you pass river road, you’ll head through Study Butte which turns into Hwy 118 and will take you straight to the end of the trip, Big Bend National Park. Big Bend is a 801,000 acre park that is home to hundreds of species that roam the vast expanse of cactus blooming desert and limestone canyons carved by the rivers that run through it. Your drive will take you 6 miles into the heart of the park on Basin Road. This leads you to Chisos, which is a remote and beautiful mountain range in the middle of the park. You can spend hours here just taking in the views and the wonder of nature around you.
